  2. Agenda Our Focus Today Is: • Describe the New York Landscape relative to Common Core • How ADNY made curriculum changes to align with Common Core Standards • Adjustments to our assessment program • Communication challenges with implementation of Common Core

The New York Landscape with Common Core • New York State Department of Education (NYSED) adopts Common Core. • Aligns with the PARCC assessment consortium in July 2010 • Modifies 15% of Common Core to create Common Core Learning Standards for NY • Starts aligning state tests with Common Core. Contracts with Pearson to develop NY state exam (ELA & Math, 3-8) • Temporary state tests prior to PARCC decision • Computerized PARCC assessments in 2014-15 • There is still much uncertainty/indecision

Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers and Principals • Spring 2012: Introductory DVD for use by principals at faculty meetings in spring of 2012 • Fall 2012: Full-day PD sessions focus on the instructional shifts and the introduction of math and ELA unit plans • Fall 2012: Cluster faculty meetings - Teachers gathered by grade level and focused on a process for implementing increased reading • Spring 2013: Full-day PD sessions by grade level- Focus on deconstructing math standards into daily objectives for lesson planning • Spring 2013: Webinars focused on understanding Depth of Knowledge and aligning assessments
