  7. 602.10.1 BRACED WALL LINES • Braced wall lines shall be designated as straight lines in the building plans • Length shall be the distance between its ends • Intersection with a perpendicular braced wall line • Angled braced wall panel as permitted in 602.10.1.1 & 602.10.1.4 • Exterior wall as shown in figure 602.10.1.1 • All exterior walls parallel to a braced wall line shall be offset not more than 4 feet

  12. 602.10.2 BRACED WALL PANELS • Shall be full-height sections of wall with no vertical or horizontal offsets • Braced Wall Panel Uplift (R602.10.2.1) • Bracing lengths apply when uplift loads are resisted per R602.3.5 • Location of BWP (R602.10.1.2) • Within 10 feet of each end • Adjacent edges of braced wall panels along BWL no greater than 20 feet

  13. 602.10.2.1 BWP UPLIFT LOAD PATH • R602.3.5 Exterior walls supporting Rafters or Trusses shall be connected: • 1. Fastening in accordance with Table R602.3(1) where: • Wind speed less than 90 Mph • Exposure B, Roof 5:12 or greater & Roof span 32 ‘ or less • The net uplift value at the top of a wall does not exceed 100 plf • 2. Where the net uplift value at the top of a wall exceeds 100 plf (146 N/mm), installing approved uplift framing connectors 3. Designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice

R602.10.3 REQUIRED LENGTH OF BRACING Bldgs in Seismic Design Categories A & B use Tbl 602.10.3(1) with adjustments of Tbl 602.10.3(2) Detached bldg in SDC C shall use Tables associated with Principal Building Design Townhouses in SDC C shall use the greater value determined from Tbl 602.10.3(1) or (3) with adjustments from Tbl 602.10.(2) All buildings in SDC D shall use greater value from Tbl 602.10.3 (1)or (3) with adjustment factors from Tbl 602.10.3(2) or (4)

  22. 602.10.4 CONSTRUCTION METHODS FOR BWP • Intermittent and Continuously sheathed BWP per Tbl 602.10.4 • Mixing bracing Methods as follow • Intermittent & continuous from story to story permitted • Mixing intermittent from BWL to BWL permitted in SDC A,B and C if Wind design is 100 or less • Mixing intermittent bracing along a BWL in SDC A & B and detached dwellings in SDC C if in accordance with Tbl 602.10.3(1) or (3) • Mixing continuous bracing CS-WSP. CS-G & CS-PF along braced wall permitted • Mixing intermittent for detached dwellings in SDC C In some instances

SIMPLIFIED WALL BRACINGR602.10.12 • Buildings meeting all conditions may use Simplified Method: • Two stories max placed on Concrete/Masonry Foundation or Basement • Floor cantilever 24” Maximum • Wall Height 10” Maximum • Roof eave to Ridge height 15” maximum • Exterior walls receive ½ “ sheetrock minimum on interior side • Located in 90/40 wind loading and Exposure A or B • Seismic Design Category A,B or C for detached A or B for Townhouses • Cripple walls not permitted in two-story buildings

  32. CIRCUMSCRIBED RECTANGLER602.12.1 • Bracing Requirements: • Determined by circumscribing rectangle around entire bldg. including all offsets and projections • No side of bldg. greater than 60” • Long wall to short wall ratio maximum of 3:1

  33. SHEATHING MATERIALSR602.10.12.2 • The Following Sheathing Materials shall be installed on exterior side of exterior walls: • 1. Wood structural panels 3/8” minimum thickness fastened per Tbl 602.3(3) • 2. Structural fiberboard sheathing minimum ½” thick fastened per Tble 602.3(1)

BRACING UNIT LOCATION & DISTRIBUTIONR602.12.4 & 5 • Each side of rectangle have minimum number of Bracing units per • Table 602.12.4 • Bracing Units to be Distributed per Figure 602.12.5 • No more than 12 feet from any wall corner • Distance between adjacent edges 20” maximum • Segments of wall greater than 8’ have minimum of one Bracing Unit

Each CS-G panel shall equal 0.5 Bracing Unit • Method CS-PF – permitted when all walls sheathed with WSP. Each panel to equal 0.5 Bracing Unit. Maximum of 4 panels on all segment of walls parallel to all sides of circumscribed rectangle • Methods PFH & PFG – permitted when using WSP. Each PFH Panel shall equal one Bracing unit. Each PFG shall equal 0.75 Bracing Unit

  39. LATERAL SUPPORTR602.12.7 • Bracing Units at eaves: Vertical distance from top wall plate to roof sheathing above shall not exceed 9.25” • Exception: Vertical distance allowed < 9.25 if lateral support is installed per R602.10.8.2

  40. STEM WALLSR602.12.8 • Masonry Stem Walls with height and length 48” or less: • Supporting a Bracing Unit or: • Method CS-G. CS-PF, PFG braced wall panel • Shall be constructed per Figure R602.10.9 • Concrete Stem Walls: • 48” or less in length, Greater than 12” tall and Less than 6” thick • Shall be reinforced sized and located per R602.10.9
