  2. In this unit we will answer these questions: •What types of characteristics are passed on from parent to offspring though genetics?

  3. In this unit we will answer these questions: •What are some types of inherited traits that are not visible? •What types of characteristics are passed on through learned behavior?

  4. This unit will have a few new vocabulary words. Copy some of these in your science notebook.

  5. Characteristic: a feature or quality belonging typically to a person, place, or thing and serving to identify it.

  6. Species: a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes.

  7. Inherited Characteristic that passes from parent to offspring. Inherited

  8. Genes: a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.

  9. Create a K-W-L chart in your notebook on the next slide. Copy the following facts we know under the What I Know section.

  10. In past science levels we rememberthat organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism.

  11. In past levels we identified ways in which many plants and animals closely resemble their parents in observed appearance and ways they are different.

  12. In past levels we recognized that there is variation among individuals that are related.
