3. Project Background • Dianshan Lake-Huangpu River upstream water source protected area offers 70% of the drinking water for Shanghai citizens. However because of serious pesticide and fertilizer pollution, the water quality does not meet the national drinking water source standards. Human health is in great danger. • According to the data, the over-use of fertilizers and pesticides mainly destroyed the water-quality. However, eco-plant technology can hardly be developed because of the lack of marketing mechanism. • Because the traditional industry and aquaculture are prohibited, the state of economic development of the water source protected area is rather low. Most of the local old farmers are poor and it’s urgent to find a way to provide a sustainable developing win-win situation.

4. Project Goal • Reduce the fertilizer and pesticide pollution of Dianshan Lake Water Source Protected Area by developing organic farming. • Establish an community support agriculture model and raise the enthusiasm and incomes of local farmers . • Construct a base with organic farming, experiential tourism and nature education for Shanghai citizens in Cenbo village (one of the national eco-cultural villages). • Project Time：Since May 2010

5. Progress( 2010.5-2010.11) • Honor: the Third prize of 2010 Shanghai Top Ten “most potential” public welfare projects • Membership: 56 persons and 4 enterprises involved; • Activity: Organized several volunteer activities for GE, Intel, UPS, Cummins, Johnson Controls etc. • Training: Held a five-days organic farming training for 30 farmers. • Event: Held an organic culture festival on 2010.8.24

The advantages of natural farming products • Advantages: • Unlike the out-of-season vegetables, the vegetables and fruits grown in the open field are tasty and nutritious because they experienced the natural sunshine, rain and dew. • Compared with chemical farming: • Non-use of pesticides , fertilizers and hormones - Good to human health and the environment. • Reduce the amount of oil used (the fertilizers and pesticides are composed by oil). Natural farming is more sustainable because all materials are natural. • Compared with organic farming: • Most organic farms are using greenhouses and the soil will salinized in 2-3 years because the level of groundwater is rather high in Shanghai. Then the soil can’t be used any more. • The cost of organic farming is high which the farmers can’t afford.
