  3. Grammar Reference, p. 109 • When I got home last night, I discovered that someone had broken into my house while I was shopping downtown. The kitchen window was open and as soon as I went into the family room, I saw that someone had taken my TV and some DVDs. I immediately called the police and told them what had happened. I then looked in my bedroom, but luckily the thief hadn’t found my expensive watch or jewelry. While I was coming out of my bedroom, I suddenly heard a noise in the kitchen. I ran downstairs and into the kitchen just as a man was climbing out of the window. Naturally, I shouted, “Hey. Who are you?,” but he didn’t stop. He jumped to the ground and drove away in a black car.

When something bad happens, we usually wish we had done something differently. • My grandfather has lung cancer. He wishes he hadn’t smoked for all those years. • I’m really hungover today! I wish I hadn’t taken those shots of tequila last night! • I didn’t get into the university that I wanted to go to. I wish I had studied harder in high school. • Now, let’s look at our patients. What are their regrets? • With a partner, discuss 2-3 regrets from your life.
