Using the Template • This is a template or a guideline—you can change any (or every) word of it! • You should modify the language to fit the “voice” of your grant. • Click on the gray boxes to fill in specific organizational info. • Modify as needed. • Remove ALL instructions in yellow • Cut and paste into application

  3. Overall Steps • Select Grantmaker • Review grantmaker’s priorities • Align priorities for overall grant request • Align priorities for technology/HOC • Set goals • Determine what you can/will measure • Determine costs

  4. Select Grantmaker • Continuous Process • Build a calendar of applicable foundations and other funders • Verify eligibility

  5. Review Grantmaker’s PrioritiesExample (GR)--Goal Formulate statements that speak directly to the grantmaker’s priorities.

  6. Are Examples Provided? • In some cases, the guidelines may give you examples. • Use the language provided, and supplement it—for example, “Foster civic engagement by engaging high school students in age-appropriate, well managed service opportunities that provide opportunities for learning and enjoyment.

  7. Align the Technology Request • How will technology be implemented? • How will it be supported? • Speak directly to the priority. • Example: By implementing Hands On Connect, our organization will better reach high school students through social media and other online efforts, and as a result more will become involved in volunteer activities.

  8. Determine Goals • What will change as a result of implementation? • More volunteers involved? • More service opportunities? • Improved follow-up, or ongoing contacts? • Better use of staff time • More volunteer recognition? • Increased contact with schools, corporations, other entities?

  9. Determine Measurables • If guidelines provide specific measurables—use them • Show change beyond simple counting measures—need outputs AND outcomes

  10. Determine Costs • Who will support the technology (staff) • How will it be implemented—outreach, communication, training • Licensing fees • A table is provided to organize costs

  11. Copy & Paste • Remove all yellow instructions; any paragraphs that don’t apply. • Depending on how the grantmaker accepts applications, you may need to adapt the format • Read/edit carefully to ensure that tense/voice is consistent
