  2. Investigation: • The one thousand and one Night • Maquamah “Badi al-Zaman al-Hamadhani” Picaresque- relationship betweenthe narrator and the “hero” and their surroundings. Written in saj~ (rhyming prose). • Butrus al-Bustani(1819- 1881) translated the Bible, Arabic Encyclopedia, historical novel (episodes from Islamic history were combined with travel, love stories and adventure).

Salim al-bustani(?-1884) Ghabat al-Haqq- philosophical work- allegory about freedom. • Al-Tahtawi(1801-1873) Taklis al-Ibriz ila Talkhis Bariz- description of life in France – account of dress, food, government, law… • Al-Manfaluti(1876-1924) al-Nazarat (vignettes) – moral vision. Adaptation of “Cyrano de Bergerac” and works by Chateaubriand, Dumas and others as romantic tales in Arabic

Al-Muwaylihi (1858-1930) Hadith Isa Ibn Hisham, was a major significant contribution to the devlopment of modern Arabic prose fiction. • Jurji Zaydan (1861-1914) Historical novel, al-Hilal (magazine, 1892) ~ Dumas an Sir W.Scott. • Niqula Haddad (1872-1954) al-Riwayat al-shahriyyah: Modern Eve (1906), Prisoner of Love. • Sarruf – “Al-Muqtataf” • Antun – “ Science, Religion and Money” • Jibran – “Broken wings” + “Spirits Rebellious”
