Invest in Knowledge! • According to a 2007 study by the US Government • Average High School income= $31,000 • Average College graduate income=$51,000 • Average Graduate degree income=$80,000 • (over a 40 year period a college graduate earns $1.17 million more than a high school graduate. Someone with a graduate degree earns 2 million more. A two year AA provides $180,000 more than a high school graduate. • Imagine trying to survive without at least a high school diploma?

  5. Which Pathway? All students, at minimum, are required to pursue the advanced pathway. Students may pursue the distinguished pathway by choice. A signed agreement is necessary for students to pursue the standard pathway.

  6. Standard Pathway This course selection guide meets basic graduation requirements and is designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs and some technical programs. *Meeting and signed agreement are necessary to follow this pathway. -- See your high school counselor or administrator.

  7. Advanced Pathway • Prepares students for post-secondary education • Fulfills the minimum requirements for admission to SD public universities and to most highly technical fields of study at technical institutes.

  8. Distinguished Pathway • Meets the highest level of academic standards and fulfills the minimum course requirements for admission to most major universities and colleges • Satisfies the requirements of the SD Board of Regents Scholar Program • One of the qualifiers for the SD Opportunity Scholarship

  9. The following slides illustrate the Advanced and Distinguished Pathways. These slides follow the graduation requirements in the order they are listed in your hand-out.

  10. English Advanced Distinguished English (4 credits total) • English 9 (1 credit) • English 10 OR Advanced English 10 (1 credit) • English 11 OR Advanced English 11 (1 credit) • 12th grade Literature (.5 credit) • 12th grade Writing (.5 credit) OR AP English 12 (1 credit) English (4 credits total) • English 9 (1 credit) • English 10 OR Advanced English 10 (1 credit) • English 11 OR Advanced English 11 (1 credit) • 12th grade Literature (.5 credit) • 12th grade Writing (.5 credit) OR AP English 12 (1 credit)

  11. 11th Grade English • Register for either English 11 or Advanced English 11 • Consult with your English teacher • Contact the registrar to register for Advanced English 11

  12. 12th Grade English • You must register for .5 credit of literature and .5 credit of composition OR • Advanced Placement English 12

Math Advanced Distinguished Mathematics (3 credits total) • Algebra 1 (1 credit) OR Algebra A & Algebra B (equals Algebra 1 and 1 elective credit) • Formal Plane Geometry or Informal Plane Geometry (1 credit) • Advanced Algebra 2 or Intermediate Algebra 2 (1 credit) Mathematics (4 credits total) • Algebra 1 (1 credit) OR Algebra A & Algebra B (equals Algebra 1 and 1 elective credit) • Formal Plane Geometry or Informal Plane Geometry (1 credit) • Advanced Algebra 2 or Intermediate Algebra 2 (1 credit) • Advanced Math Elective (1 credit)

  14. 11th Grade Math Your math teacher will recommend your math class for next year based upon your math achievements. Options during 11th grade: • Plane Geometry or Informal Plane Geometry • Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry (YEAR long) • Trigonometry (Semester Only) • Probability & Statistics • Algebra 2 or Intermediate Algebra 2 • Algebra B

  15. 12th Grade Math Your math teacher will recommend your math class for next year based upon your math achievements. Options during 12th grade: • Plane Geometry or Informal Plane Geometry • Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry (YEAR Long) • Trigonometry (Semester Only) • Advanced Placement Calculus • Probability & Statistics • Algebra 2 or Intermediate Algebra 2

Summary 11th Grade PSAT will be offered at Stevens High School on October 15, 2011 The PSAT is a practice test for college entrance exams The PSAT is required of juniors who hope to qualify as National Merit Scholars Counselors encourage juniors to take the ACT and or SAT in the spring of their junior year
