Antenatal Education Programme • Pregnancy and birth is a key time of change • All parents want their child to be healthy and to do well in life • Antenatal education plays a key role - especially for first time parents • DoH commissioned research to develop an evidenced based programme • ‘Preparing for pregnancy, birth and beyond’ published in 2010. 2

  3. Development of the Medway Programme • Multi-agency workshops • Outline plan developed involving:- • Medway Community Health • Health Visitors • Midwifery • Children’s Centres • Public Health • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Commissioning 3

Development of the Medway Programme • Pilot start date agreed – July 2012 • Proposed start at Delce and Kingfisher Centres • Despite lack of referrals, pilot began at Delce Childrens Centre • Second pilot agreed for October 2012 (Burnt Oak Centre) • Advertising material distributed throughout • Only two referrals 4

The Way Forward • There is still a definite need for this service • Other organisations have good attendance (NCT) • Still in contact with other agencies • Lead now Carole Campbell – Head of Children’s Services • - in touch with Midwifery • Future – propose evening sessions – some Children’s • Centres are already doing this 5
