  2. The Times September 1943: My division of nurses accompanied US forces at the invasion of Italy. May 1945: Germany surrenders. December 1941: US enters war. July 1943: I received my formal training and entered the war as a nurse. July 1944: We receive word of the success of D-Day.

  3. Worth 1000 Words I found this child abandoned in Salnero during a bomb warning. The gas masks we are wearing are to keep us from breathing in the debris of the possible bombs. One weekend, some locals brought us some tea to thank us for helping. Here we are enjoying the break from the normal rations, which were nasty bits of dried fruit and meat we had trouble choking down at first!

  4. Breaking News This article from 1946 and famous news picture from 1945 made the life of an army nurse seem easy and glamorous. Once, some new nurses entered our group because of this newspaper article, thinking their job would be easy. No one was prepared for what we ended up facing.

  5. Our Precious Things This is the uniform I wore during most of the war. It was itchy, and no one had the right size because we had to wear whatever we could. These are some German coins one of the doctors gave to me. He said that he found them on a German soldier who died in surgery. I was shocked they had tried to save a German.

  6. My Papers This an ID card from one of my best friends during the war. A few years after the war, she sent this to me. She said it was worthless to her now, and she wanted me to have it to remember her. My parents sent this newspaper clipping to me along with a letter begging me to come home. I missed them, but I wanted to fulfill my patriotic duties.
