  2. Stem Changing Verbs You learned to call them BOOT verbs! …Because the forms that have a change are in the shape of a boot.

  3. We have these “BOOT” verbs in the present tense only. We wear boots in the present, the here and now!

  4. But in the past they didn’t wear boots. They went barefoot!

  5. In the past preterite tense, “boot” verbs do not exist. PENSAR = to plan PENSAR = to plan

  6. As time went on, some people began to use primitive forms of shoes. Only a few that could afford them (“Hmmm, I can buy those”)! Sandals

  7. Hence you will find a few “sandal” verbs in the past preterite tense in verbs that end in -IR. SERVIR = to serve SERVIR= to serve They are called “sandal” verbs because the forms that change are the shape of the bottom of a sandal.

  8. SEGUIR = to follow SEGUIR= to follow They are called “sandal” verbs because the forms that change are the shape of the bottom of a sandal.

  9. PREFERIR= to prefer PREFERIR= to prefer They are called “sandal” verbs because the forms that change are the shape of the bottom of a sandal.
