Music Education at YGS • As a music educator, I feel that music is vital to the success of your student and I do my best to ensure that they are participating in a well-rounded and engaging music program. • On the next slide, you will see the National Standards for Music Education. Following the standards, you will see a few activities that students will do throughout the year to ensure national standards are being met.

Singing, alone and with others Performing on instruments, alone and with others Improvising melodies Composing and arranging music Reading and notating music Listening, analyzing, and describing music Evaluating music and performance Understand the relationship between music and other disciplines. Understand music in relation to history and culture. National StandardsAt a Glance

Third and Second Grade Highlights • Demonstrate tuneful singing through classroom activities and concerts. *1,3 • Create and arrange basic compositions and then perform on classroom instruments. *2,3,4,5 • Describe music and how it affects emotions *6,7 • Study various composers. Listen to a famous work and identify various musical elements heard and seen. *6,8,9 *Third and second grade share many of the same components. However, third grade curriculum and expectations are at a deeper level than second grade.

First Grade and Kindergarten Highlights • Demonstrate tuneful singing through classroom activities and concerts *1 • Identify and perform steady beat and basic rhythm patterns *2,3,5 • Listen to music and describe various musical elements *6,7 • Learn about composers and their influence on music of their time *6,8,9
