  2. Computer Operations • Things to know about your computer • The computer is made up of the following parts: • Monitor--displays the video and graphics information generated by the computer • Also Known as: Screen, display, video display and video screen.

Computer Operations • Keyboard--The keyboard is an input device designed to enter text, characters and other commands into the computer. • Mouse--A mouse is a small device used to point to and select items on your computer screen. • Central Processing Unit (CPU), or microprocessor, which acts as the "brain" of your computer. • Internet--computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide .

  4. Computer Operations • Network—Share information among computers i.e. our computer lab.

Computer Hardware • Peripheral Devices: • Scanner--A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters, magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display. • Printer--device that accepts text and graphic output from a computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard size sheets of paper.

Computer Hardware • Storage Devices--a hardware device capable of storing information. • Input Devices: • any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer . • Keyboard, mouse, and scanner to name a couple.

  7. Computer Hardware • Output Devices: • An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results carried out by a computer to the outside world. • Screen, printer, and speakers to name a few.

  8. Computer Software • Web Based Applications: • Applications that only run on an active internet. • Examples: Web browsers (Internet Explorer & Firefox), Poptropica, Facebook, and Email.

  9. Computer Software • Device Based Applications: • collection of computer programs and related data that provides the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it.

  10. Computer Software Examples • Microsoft Word--always handy for basic word-processing. The strip across the top of the window that shows what a program can do • Power Point--The presentations are comprised of slides, which may contain text, images, and other media, such as audio clips and movies. Sound effects and animated transitions can also be included.

  11. Troubleshooting • What is Troubleshooting? • Troubleshooting is the process of diagnosing the source of a problem. It is used to fix problems with hardware, software, and many other products. • Start with the most general (and often most obvious) possible problems,

  12. Troubleshooting Examples Your computer's screen is not producing an image, you may be asked to answer the following troubleshooting questions: Is the monitor plugged in? Is it turned on? Is the computer turned on?

  13. More Examples My Keyboard will not type. Is it plugged into the CPU? Try plugging it into another port. My Mouse does not work. Is it plugged into the CPU? Try plugging it into another port.
