  4. Session Objectives • Increase awareness of people with disabilities and improve levels of comfort in working with diverse groups of people. • Learn to implement best practices and strategies.

  5. ADA • Federal Law: Signed into law in 1990 • Prohibits discrimination based on a disability in • Transportation • Telecommunications • Public accommodations • Commercial facilities • Employment • State and local government

ADA • Covers individuals with physical or mental impairment(s) that substantially limit a major life activity, those who have a record of a substantially limiting impairment, and people who are regarded as having a substantially limiting impairment, AND who: • are qualified in education, experience, skills, licenses, and any other qualification standards that are job related and set. • are able to perform those tasks that are essential to the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  7. ADA SECTION 501 requires affirmative action and nondiscrimination in employment by Federal agencies of the executive branch. SECTION 503 requires affirmative action and prohibits employment discrimination by Federal government contractors and subcontractors with contracts of more than $10,000.

  8. ADA SECTION 504 created and extended civil rights to people with disabilities. Section 504 has provided opportunities for children and adults with disabilities in education, employment and various other settings. It allows for reasonable accommodations such as a special study area and assistance as necessary for each student. SECTION 508 Required Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.

  9. Accommodations Under the ADA • Any modification or adjustment to a job or the work environment that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in the application process or to perform essential job functions. • Job Accommodation Network (JAN) (2011) reported that 56% of employers experienced NO cost for the accommodations they made; while 38% of employers experienced a one time cost of between $1 and $500.
