  1. Seat #___ Name _________ page 1 Physical Science 2nd Semester Physics Draw motion

  2. What is Your Displacement pg7 1. Draw a map from school to your house. 2. Place a dot at your house. 3. Place a second dot at the school. 4. Write a paragraph describing the directions.

  3. Distance and Displacement p8 • Distance – the length of a path between two points (How many steps taken) • Ex: 40m + 30m = 70m • Displacement– shortest path between two points with direction • (How far away from start and direction) • Ex: 50m east then 40m west is calculated as 50m east - 40m west = 10m east

  4. Practice Distance and Displacement pg8 • Below your notes draw the following: • Draw a dot at the top of the space on your paper. • Connect the two dots using 5 straight lines in a zigzag pattern. • Use a ruler to determine the distance of your path. • Use a ruler to determine the displacement from start to finish in cm. Distance (how far your pencil moved) = ______ cm Displacement (line from first to last dot) = ______ cm

  5. Speed pg 10 • Motion – change in position with frame of reference • Speed – distance moved in a given time • (How fast are you going?) ratio or rate • s=d/t s=speed d=distance t=time • SI unit: m/s m=meter s=second

  6. Velocity pg 10 Velocity– speed plus direction • Ex: m/s north • (How fast are you going in a direction? • Ques: If you are going the same speed around a race track does your velocity change?

  7. Types of Speed/Velocity pg 10 • Instantaneous – rate at a specific instant Ex: radar gun measures how fast right now • Constant Speed – your speed remains the same Ex: using cruise control in your car • Average Speed – total distance travelled in total time (How fast was the whole trip?) • Ex: Average speed to Greenville is 42 mi/hr
