  1. Debriefing the Circle Mary Lancaster Mitch Kutzko Hope Center for Personal Empowerment

  2. Overview of Block • Pre-simulation briefing • Post-simulation debrief • Without aggressors present • Aggressors return • Watch tape • Final circle • Share *your* experiences

  3. Context of the Debrief • Essential Component of Simulation • Reduces impact of stress encountered • Opportunity for students to discuss • With and without aggressors present • Focus is the students’ experience • No two debriefs will be the same

  4. Format of Debrief • Pre-simulation talk with students • Post-simulation discussion w/o Aggressors • Post-simulation discussion with Aggressors • Watch video • Continue discussion • Final Circle

  5. Surviving the Debrief • Use your envelope • Talk with aggressors before class begins • Review wellness forms • Release forms for aggressors • Share any concerns/observations about specific students • Talk with aggressors after class ends • Instructor debrief is *essential*

  6. Explaining Simulation • During last class session prior to simulation • Bringing in X number of other instructors • Ask about having media present • Show them student gear • Debrief after simulation is part of class • PTSD • “You have all the tools you need” • Positive visualization exercise

  7. Pre-Simulation Briefing • Three scenarios (or four). • All of you will do scenario 1, then 2 etc. • Cheer each other on • You can’t hurt the aggressors • “What is your goal?” • Use of whistle • Get them pumped up during RADical warmup

  8. Post-Sim, Without Aggressors • 10-15 minutes • Water break and wellness check • Guided discussion • Encourage each student to talk • But don’t make them if they don’t want to • Usually a strong undercurrent of skepticism about their abilities at this point

  9. Questions • Was it what you expected? • What *did* you expect? • What do you think you learned? • How long do you think it lasted? • Did you encounter any new situations? • Takedowns, lifts • Did you remember technique?

  10. Questions • What techniques did you use? • Did you get disoriented about location? • Were you able to defend yourself successfully? • Is there anything else you want to talk about before the aggressors return and we watch the video?

  11. Instructors return • Introduce Instructors who were Aggressors • Assess students’ frame of mind • Continue guided discussion • Focus students on their current perception of competence to set up post-video discussion • Don’t give much feedback here.

  12. Questions • How do you think you did? • Solicit reactions again • Do you think we went easy on you? • Do you think we gave away anything that wasn’t earned? • How long do you think it took? • Talk about tunnel vision here

  13. Video • Observe the students’ reactions • Keep chatter to a minimum • This is the student’s time • Compliment each student somehow • THAT was clean! • Excellent verbalization!

  14. After the Video • So, *now* how do you think you did? • Very different feeling • Did it feel like what it looked like? • Did you see yourself doing things you don’t remember doing? • Did we give any gifts? • Now how long do you think it took?

  15. Discussion • “Cheating” by the aggressors • Would students switch gears? • Non-RAD technique • Pushing, bulling, running around • Didn’t work – Strength-based • Right cross, forearm blows, flying hammerfist • Not ideal, but accepted. Context.

  16. Answering Questions • NEVER tell a student you were hurt. • Don’t take away from what they’ve earned by making them feel bad for what they did. • “We can feel it, but it doesn’t hurt.” • Explain how the aggressors react as if they’re not wearing the suit. • “Tap the bottom of your shoe.”

  17. Leading the Final Circle • Positive visualization • Think of three people for whom you took this class…. • Visualize that you’re attacked on the way home…. • Closing comments from all instructors present • Stretch/Hug trick • Sign manuals and take group picture • End of class

  18. Closing Remarks • This is how we do it. • We hope we gave you some good ideas. • Your mileage may vary. • Try some things and see what works for you.

  19. Open Discussion • SHARE! • What do *you* do? • What works for you? • What didn’t work for you? • And what about Naomi?

  20. Thank you!
