SUPPORTING DETAILS • An example with a few supporting details: • Hatchet takes place in the Canadian wilderness during the 20th century. The main character, Brian, has survived a plane crash and must find a way to remain alive, despite grueling conditions. The setting of the book actually causes the primary conflict in this story. The setting also affects the atmosphere of the book, because the dangers of being alone in the wilderness provide a great deal of suspense for the reader.
SUPPORTING DETAILS • An example with more supporting details: • Hatchet takes place in the Canadian wilderness during the 20th century. The main character, Brian, has survived a plane crash and must find a way to remain alive, despite grueling conditions. Some of the difficulties Brian faces include eating poisonous berries, being attacked by a moose, searching for shelter, building a fire, and devising a way to catch fish. The setting of the book actually causes the primary conflict in this story. Had the story not taken place in this setting, Brian would not have faced the same challenges. The setting also affects the atmosphere of the book, because the dangers of being alone in the wilderness provide a great deal of suspense for the reader. Not knowing if Brian will survive all of the problems he encounters leaves the reader wondering what will happen next.

Although the loose ends appear to be tied up at the end of the book, the author actually did write a sequel to this book. I thought the end of the story was somewhat anti-climactic, after all the adventures Brian faced during his time in the wilderness. The ending was more predictable than the rest of the book.

Although the loose ends appear to be tied up at the end of the book, the author actually did write a sequel to this book. In fact, the author wrote four more books about Brian, each of which takes place after he returns home from his adventure in Hatchet. I thought the end of the story was somewhat anti-climactic, after all the adventures Brian faced during his time in the wilderness. After all of the suspense in the book, Brian being rescued really wasn’t as exciting to me. The ending was more predictable than the rest of the book. It seemed an obvious conclusion, from the very beginning of the book, that Brian would eventually be rescued.
SUPPORTING DETAILS • Hopefully you recognized that, although the first responses to each question were satisfactory, the responses that included more detail were more informative. • Remember that the more detail you include, the better your answer will be. Just be sure that you don’t get sidetracked and wander off topic!
