  3. I. Tokugawa Japan • Shoguns- supreme military dictators who ruled Japan • Tokugawa- family of shoguns who ruled Japan • Restored feudalism • Closed Japan to foreigners • Stifled Japan’s economy and growth

  5. II. Japan Opens Up • In 1853 U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry, sailed into Tokyo Bay with a letter from Pres. Fillmore demanding Japan open its ports to trade • Japan was forced to accept unequal treaties with the U.S • Discontent in Japan boiled over with foreign pressure

Japan Modernizes • Meiji Restoration- Japan overthrows the shogun and restores the emperor • Japan reorganized their government • Strong central government • Diet- Japanese legislature • Ended feudalism and special privilege for Samurai • Japan adapts Western technology and industrializes • Japan modernized with amazing speed

Japan’s Military Strength • Due to Japan’s industrialization it needed natural resources • Japan fought and won two wars Russo-Japanese and Sino-Japanese War • Japan won control of Korea and repressed the Koreans • This showed Japan as a world power • Japan was able to revoke the unequal treaties
