  1. Critical Vocabulary Terms Unit 7 – Plate Tectonics (Planet Earth)

  2. Mantle The mantle is a layer between Earth’scrust and the outer core.

  3. Crust The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. The Earth's Crust is like the skin of an apple, very thin at about 3-5 miles (8 kilometers). The Crust is the outer part!

  4. Asthenosphere It lies below the lithosphere. The asthenosphere is the highly viscous, mechanically weak and ductilely-deforming region of the upper mantle of the Earth.

  5. Lithosphere Includes the crust and the uppermost mantle. It is rigid, but behaves elastically over thousands of years or more.

  6. Core Earth’s core is the very hot center of our planet.

  7. Plates The plates are made of rock and drift all over the globe; they move horizontally (sideways) and vertically (up and down). The plates also change in size as they are crushed together, or pushed back into the mantle. These plates are from 50 to 250 miles (80 to 400 km) thick.

  8. Plate Tectonics Plate Tectonics is a scientific theory that describes the large-scale motions of Earth’s lithosphere.

  9. Boundaries Diverge and divide…converge and collide…..transform on the plates we sliiiide. There are 3 primary types of Tectonic Plate boundaries: Divergent boundaries; Covergent boundaries; and Transform boundaries.

  10. Convergent Boundary A convergent boundary is where two (or more) tectonic plates of the lithosphere move toward one another and collide. When two plates move towards one another, they form either a subduction zone or a continental collision. Hey!!! watch where you’re going!!!

  11. Divergent Boundary When two tectonic plates move away from each other.

  12. Transform Boundary Transform Boundaries Places where plates slide past each other are called transform boundaries.

  13. Weathering The breaking down of rocks, soil and minerals as well as artificial materials through contact with the wind, biota (living things), and water.

  14. Erosion The process by which soil and rock are removed from the Earth's surface by wind or water flow and then transported and deposited in other locations.

  15. Deposition Deposition is the process by which sediments, soil, and rocks are added to a landform or land mass.

  16. Convection The transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular motion.
