  1. NetZero SummitHPBA Pacific & HPBA Sacramento, California June 28, 2011

  2. Agenda • Introductions • Background on California & Federal Residential Energy Issues • Background on the California Energy Commission (CEC) • Report on four scoping meetings • Presentation by CEC staff • Presentation by CBIA staff • GOAL: Joint Steering Committee

  3. What, is “NetZero” • A net zero energy building consumes only as much energy on an annual basis as can be generated with an on-site renewable energy system.(2007 IEPR)

  4. Tiered Approach, Mandatory vs. “Reach” Standards • The Energy Commission has begun a path toward a tiered approach to achieve zero net energy. • Base tier will be the traditional mandatory standard that increases in stringency with every code cycle. • Additional tiers-voluntary, represent a "reach" standard for advanced energy efficiency.

  5. NetZero Concept – Cont: • Intent of the advanced, voluntary tiers is to provide industry with framework for differentiating highly energy-efficient buildings from standard buildings. • To pilot these enhanced features in the field to see how well they work before determining which measures should be included in future mandatory standards. • Mandatory & reach standards will be developed in parallel.

  6. Basic concept-ZEH-NetZero • Very low envelope loss or gain • In Cold climates, passive gain • In hot climates, minimize summer heat gain • PV system generates significant Electric load • May use Electric Grid as storage • Usually acknowledges Source energy • Gas heat in some concepts, grudgingly • Utilizes low energy appliances, does not address plug load • Green Building doesn’t always equal NetZero

  7. USDOE/EERE Building America Research Teams 15 research teams- each with 3 -10 members and 1 lead organization • NAHB research center • U of Minnesota • Florida Solar Energy Center • Penn State • Dow Chemical Co (retrofit methodologies) • Consol • Gas Technology Institute • EERE committed to many millions for research through this system

  8. What’s At Stake- Future Design of All New North American Homes
