  3. Denotation and Connotation Denotation is the exact dictionary definition. Connotation is the cultural or emotional connections of a word. adjective adjective noun noun verb verb

  4. The problem? • Denotation versus Connotation • My students and I were using the same definition (denotation) of the word fat. • BUT…we had different connotations (emotional connections) with the word fat. • A word can have different kinds of connotations: • Positive, neutral, or negative

  5. Vocabulary There are 3 kinds of connotations: Positive/Good Neutral/Not Good or Bad Negative/Bad
