  1. Guess the vertebrate Exploring the 5 vertebrate types

  2. Vertebrate Group 1 • Most have slippery scales • They breathe through gills • They spend their entire life in fresh water, ocean water, or both.

  3. Vertebrate Group 2 • They spend part of the life in water and part on land. • Most young live in water. • Lay eggs in water. • They get oxygen through gills and through their smooth, moist skin. • As they grow, most develop lungs that they use to breathe air.

  4. Vertebrate Group 3 • They have mostly dry, scaly skin. • These vertebrates breathe air through lungs • Most lay eggs, but some have live births. • Cold-blooded (body temperature changes with the surrounding air, land, or water temperature.)

  5. Vertebrate Group 4 • They breath air through lungs. • Lay hard-shelled eggs. • They have feathers and bills that do not have teeth. • Their coats of feathers help them stay warm. • Wings and light bones help most fly.

  6. Vertebrate Group 5 • They have fur or hair at least during part of their lives. • The hair keeps them warm. • They breathe air through lungs. • They feed milk to their young. • They do not lay eggs, but have live births.

  7. Jigsaw • Today, you will work with a group to identify animals in one of the five vertebrate groups. • Depending on the number you were given during the explore, you will work to identify: • 1 – Fishes • 2 – Amphibians • 3 – Reptiles • 4 – Birds • 5 – Mammals • You will work with your current group to sort out the different types of vertebrate. After a few minutes, you will go to your new vertebrate group and create a poster with the animals you have selected. Once you meet with your new group, decide if you all agree that the animals you’ve brought to include are in that group. The poster needs to include the name of your vertebrate group and on the back, the names of the members of your group.

  8. C.H.A.M.P.S. • C – Level 2 • H – Raise your hand. • A – Sorting Vertebrate • M-Move to new group when signaled • P – Poster of your vertebrate group. • S – Correctly identified all the vertebrate in your group.
