  8. Faculty Mentoring and Shadowing • Each new instructor is supported by and shadows a veteran faculty member • Mentors: • Work beside 1-4 new instructors per quarter • Email and IM mentees frequently • Participate in the mid-quarter evaluation process

  9. New Instructors: • Have access to the mentor’s course, Message Board, and Seminars • Receive weekly email from mentor with tips and reminders for the week

Departmental Handbooks • Each department has a handbook filled with pedagogical and technical tips and guidelines • Topics include: • Giving good qualitative feedback • Developing and using rubrics for assessment of student work • Detecting and preventing plagiarism • Getting disruptive or non-engaged students re-engaged

  13. Faculty Monitoring • Designed to benefit students and their learning • Chairs monitor performance of all faculty every week • Uniform reporting of data from all departments to deans, provost, and president • Chairs review results with deans and identify faculty who need additional support

  15. Remediation and Support • Chairs work intensively with faculty whose performance lags • Department members support each other and discuss teaching and learning within the discipline • “Course cohorts” work together to discuss teaching and learning with respect to a specific course

Professional Development • Goal is to retain, nurture top faculty • Opportunities to lead course cohorts, develop new courses, mentor new faculty, participate in institutional research projects, conduct workshops at semiannual faculty retreats • Some funding for external professional development
