  2. Clutch Wrench • A hand tool used to remove the starter clutch on small gasoline engines.

  3. Compression Gauge • Used to check compression pressures of the cylinders on internal combustion engines.

  4. Cylinder Deglazer • An abrasive tool used to remove the glassy glaze from the cylinder wall of an internal combustion engine.

  5. Dial Indicator • A precision micrometer type instrument that gives an exact reading as the needle moves around the dial face.

  6. Dwell-Tachometer • Combination meter used for measuring contact dwell and engine rpms.

  7. Feeler Gauge • A precision measuring tool used to check clearances between parts. Available in either thin blades of hardened steel or wire. The thickness of the thin blades or wire is marked in thousandths of an inch or in millimeters.

  8. Flywheel Holder • Used to hold the flywheel on small gasoline engines when the starter clutch is being removed or installed.

  9. Flywheel Removal Tool • Designed to assist in the removal of the flywheel.

  10. Micrometer • A precision measuring tool that will give readings accurate to within ten thousandths of an inch.

  11. Piston Compression Ring • Seals the gap between the cylinder and piston wall so that combustion will take place.

  12. Piston Oil Ring • Carries oil up and down the cylinder wall in an internal combustion engine.

  13. Piston Scraper Ring • Scrapes and cleans the walls of the piston in an internal combustion engine.

  15. Power Timing Light • Used to indicate the correct timing of the ignition of a spark ignition engine. This is connected to the secondary circuit which produces flashes of light with the firing of a specific spark plug. Generally connected to number 1 cylinder.

  16. Puller Set • Used to remove bearings, pulleys, and other shaft hugging instruments.

  17. Ridge Reamer • Tool used to cut away the ring ridge at the top of the cylinder.

  18. Ring Compressor • A tool designed to force piston rings inward into their grooves so that the piston and rings can be inserted into the engine cylinder bore.

  19. Ring Expander • A tool designed to force piston rings outward so the rings can be removed or installed.

  20. Small Hole Gauge • This adjustable gauge is used to measure the inside diameter of small holes. The gauge is adjusted to the hole diameter and then measured with an outside micrometer.

  21. Spark Plug • A device that carries the electrical ignition impulse into the combustion chamber.

  22. Spark Plug Gauge • Used to adjust the terminal gap on a spark plug.

  23. Spark Plug Socket • A specially designed deep socket with an internal rubber cushion to protect and grip the porcelain body of the spark plug when installing or removing.

  24. Spark Plug Wrench Used when removing and installing the spark plug or other adjustments on some brands of chain saws and other small engines.

  25. Small Engine Tachometer • Used to indicate speed of engine in revolutions per minute (rpm).

  26. Telescoping Gauge • Used to measure the inside diameter of cylinders or large bores with the aid of a micrometer.

  27. Torque Wrench • Used to draw or tighten nuts, cap screws, and other various bolts to specified amounts by measuring the force applied.

  28. Valve Spring Compressor • Used to compress the valve spring in order to remove or install valve retainer.

  29. Connecting Rod Serves as a lever arm that transfers combustion forces from the piston to the crankshaft.

  30. Connecting Rod Cap The cap is placed the large end of the connecting rod to attach it to the crankshaft.

  31. Piston • This slides back and forth in the cylinder and receives the force of combustion and transfers it through the connecting rod to the crankshaft.

  32. Engine Block • Serves as the main structure of the engine and supports and maintains alignment of all external and internal components.

  33. Cylinder Head • Fastens to the end of the cylinder block at the farthest point from the crankshaft.

  34. Head Gasket • Filler material used between the cylinder head and the cylinder block to seal the combustion chamber.

  35. Camshaft • Used to precisely open and close the valves to allow the air-fuel mixture to enter and exhaust gases to exit.

  36. Crankshaft • Converts the linear movement of the piston and connecting rod into rotary motion.

  37. Dial Caliper • Used to measure accurate inside and outside dimensions.

  38. Valve These open and close at precise times to allow fuel and air mixture to enter or exhaust gases to exit the combustion chamber.

  39. Tappet • Rides on the camshaft and pushes the valve stem to open the valve.

  40. Rocker Arm • A pivoting device used to open and close overhead valves.

  41. Valve Spring • A compression spring used to close the valve and hold it tightly against the valve seat.

  42. Flywheel • A cast iron, aluminum, or zinc disc mounted at one end of the crankshaft to provide inertia for the engine.

  43. Starter Clutch • Attaches to the flywheel end of the crankshaft and used with a rewind starter to mechanically start the engine.

  44. Ignition Armature • Contains two or more coils which, when acted upon by a magnetic field, induce electrical energy to the spark plug.

  45. Sump • On vertical shaft engines, a removable part of the crankcase that is an oil reservoir and provides access to internal parts, as well as a bearing surface for the crankshaft and camshaft.

  46. Crankcase Cover • On horizontal shaft engines, this and the crankcase provide the oil reservoir and allows access to internal parts. It serves as a bearing surface for the crankshaft and camshaft.

  47. Carburetor • Provides the required air-fuel mixture to the combustion chamber based on engine operating speed and load.

  48. Starter Cup • Attaches to the flywheel end of the crankshaft and used with a rewind starter to mechanically start the engine.

  49. Blower Housing • Used to direct air flow generated from the flywheel fins, over the head of the engine for cooling purposes. Also provides a mounting surface for the rewind starter.

  50. Push Rod • Transfers motion from the tappet to one side of the rocker arm in overhead valve engines.
