  1. Grand Strategy

  2. What is Grand Strategy? • This is the choices a government makes to apply economic, military, diplomatic, and other resources to preserve the country’s people, territory, economy, and values • To coordinate and direct all the resources of power of a nation towards the attainment of an overall objective.

  3. How does this differ from other strategies? • First, Grand Strategy expands beyond just military strategy, although it does include it. • Second, Grand Strategy examines both internal as well as external factors • Third, it accounts for both periods of peacetime and wartime • Overall, Grand Strategy is an all encompassing strategy for a country

  4. Some questions to consider when building grand strategy • What should the focus of the grand strategy be? What is the problem we are trying to address? • Is there going to be consensus for the grand strategy? Is everyone going to agree on the problem and the course of action the grand strategy takes? • Is there enough leadership to implement policies for the grand strategy?

  5. Reminder of foreign policy strategy • Isolationism – A policy of avoiding participation in foreign affairs. • Moralism – A policy of emphasizing morality in foreign affairs. • Pragmatism – A policy of taking advantage of a situation for national gain. • Unilateralism – A policy of acting without consulting other nations. • Multilateralism – A policy of taking action after consulting with other nations. • Preemption – A strike first policy to defend against potential attack

  6. Examples of Grand Strategy • Homeland defense and the war on terror following the September 11th attacks. • U.S. policy of containment towards communism during the Cold War.
