  2. Connector • When comparing language for effect, what language features could you be looking for?: List of Language Features Extension: How would you use the language features you identify to help you write about language?

List of Language Features rhetorical questions, emotive language, sentence structure, metaphor, repetition, alliteration, anecdote, simile, metaphor, personification, list of three, adjectives/adverbs, personal pronouns, active verbs, humour, facts, opinions, formal/informal (colloquial) – more???

  4. Question 4: Comparison Look at Source 1 and Source 2. Compare the way that both texts use language for effect. Remember to:  write about the way the sources use language features  explain the effect of the language features  compare the different language features. (16 marks) What techniques can you use to answer this question in your planning?

  8. Model Answer The Kony online text uses strong and powerful adjectives to gets its message across about what an horrific person Joseph Kony is. For instance, “cruel”, “brutal” “world’s worst war criminal”. The effect on the reader will be to help us understand what a heartless and disgusting person he is and so help to shock the reader into joining the campaign to rid the world of terrible criminals like Kony.Similarly, the Red Nose Day online text uses emotive language in the form of adjectives to describe what life is like for people living in “urban slums” – however, here this language is used for a different purpose. It is used to tell us how difficult life is for many poor people in Africa.Their life is described as “desperate” and “tough”. The effect on the reader is that we feel sorry for these people and are therefore persuaded to get involved with Red Nose Day.

You need to make sure you compare in every paragraph! This means using a comparative connective

This will be given a grade and you will need to work on your comparative analysis based on the targets given to you. • Remember: • Use the writing frame • You need a short intro and 4 comparative paragraphs • You need to use a comparative connective • You still need good analysis of language features

  15. Improve this Paragraph • In pairs try to improve the following paragraph and highlight the PEA and comparative connective used. The Red Nose Day page uses lots of personal pronouns. The effect is that it is persuasive and it makes the reader donate money because the article is speaking directly to them. The Kony webpage uses lots of questions to get the reader thinking about Kony and who he is.
