  1. Group Work (15 Mins) • Share your write-up with your partner. • Compare graphical user interface, command line interface & Menu Based interface. • Decide on common attributes across all 3 types to compare • Rank the performance of each attribute • Decide on a format to put across your answer Cs2014.wiki.hci.edu.sg

  2. Homework Do a write up on the strength & weaknesses of • CLI • MBI • GUI In your opinion, which is the best interface and justify why so. Word processed and print a copy for submission.

  3. Feedback on assignment • Importance of format Text is the obvious choice however if you choose to put in a table format. What should be included? 1) What(Characteristics) 2) Strength 3)Weaknesses 4)Remarks • Point for is not sufficient Most of the time justifications and elaborations are needed, no matter how obvious is it. Point form will not be able to bring across the connections.

  4. What? UI The means by which the user and a computer system interact, in particular the use of input devices and software I/O Devices • Traditional • Keyboard/ Mouse • Cameras/Scanners • Display / Printers • New Generation • Touchscreen • Accelerometer • Gyroscope • Types Of UI • Traditional • GUI • CL • Menu Based • New Generation • Gesture • Motion Tracking • Voice • Natural Language New technologies realizes UI What? Characteristics? Strength? Weaknesses?

  5. Accelerometer • a device that can measure the force of acceleration, whether caused by gravity or by movement. • An accelerometer can therefore measure the speed of movement of an object it is attached to. • Gyroscope • It is a device used to measure or maintain orientation. Gyroscope together with accelerometer improves motion sensing accuracy and allows the device to measure in which direction you are moving/rotating it in space (roll, pitch and yaw), how much and how fast.

  6. New Generation of UIs • Minority Report • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SFeCgoep1c • Iron Man 1:21:30 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KPhqy7ZwHU

  7. New Generation of UI Gesture interfaces are graphical user interfaces which accept input in a form of hand gestures, or mouse gestures sketched with a computer mouse or a stylus. Eg. Mobile phone OS Motion tracking interfaces monitor the user's body motions and translate them into commands http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d6KuiuteIA Voice user interfaces which accept input and provide output by generating voice prompts. The user input is made by pressing keys or buttons, or responding verbally to the interface. Eg. Siri Natural-Language interfaces Used for search engines and on webpages. User types in a question and waits for a response. It is sought after for their speed and ease of use, but most suffer the challenges to understanding wide varieties of ambiguous input. Eg. Wolfgram, Google

  8. New Generation of UI We are interested in the followings: • What are they? • What are the current technology that allows this Uis? • Examples • Strengths and weaknesses

  9. Group Work In pairs, work on a presentation on the 4 interfaces. • Gesture interfaces • Motion tracking interfaces  • Voice user interfaces • Natural-Language interfaces Things you should include • What are they? Examples/pictures • What are the strengths and weaknesses of each UI • Provide areas of current/possible usage You are encourage to include: • Graphics, Demo, Videos To bring across your point Upload your ppt to the wiki

  10. Presentation

  11. Home work Research and do a write-up on • Gesture interfaces • Motion tracking interfaces  • Voice user interfaces • Natural-Language interfaces Things you should include • What are they? Examples/pictures • What are the strengths and weaknesses of each UI • Provide areas of current/possible implementations • Your personal opinion on each interface • Define the relationship between them (If any)

  12. Homework Note: • Individual Work • This is not a GP essay but I will prefer it to be in your own words rather than copy and paste • Write up should be around A4, 2-3 pages, font 12, single spacing, normal margins, in B&W • Submission Next Friday (Hardcopy) & email softcopy
