  2. Jean Senebier Prior Knowledge

  3. Jean Senebier Experiment • He wanted to investigate the relationship between carbon dioxide and oxygen • He hypothesized that the evolution of oxygen under light depends on the amount of carbon dioxide available to the plant. • He placed illuminated leaves in carbon dioxide free water, and observed that oxygen was not being released. He then placed illuminated leaves in carbon dioxide saturated water and observed that oxygen liberation was far greater than in ordinary water. • He also measured the solubility of carbon dioxide and air in water, and found them to be soluble. • He also had a control group. For this he investigated carbon dioxide saturated water without the illuminated leaves and noticed that no oxygen was being formed. • He confirmed his results by performing the same experiment in the air instead of using water.

  4. Jean Senebier What does the Experiment mean? • Plants need carbon dioxide and release oxygen when exposed to light (gases were absorbed and released). • Also discovered that the release of oxygen during photosynthesis accompanies the uptake of carbondioxide. • The carbon dioxide will come from the air or soil.

  5. Theodore de Saussure Prior Knowledge

  6. Theodore de Saussure Experiment • He enclosed plants in glass containers and weighed the plants and the enclosed carbon dioxide before and after. • How to separate carbon dioxide: use a plastic membrane material that has been structured by means of nano technology. It will catch carbon dioxide while the other gasses will pass freely. • The weight of the carbon absorbed was less than the total weight increase of the plant.

  7. Theodore de Saussure What does the Experiment mean? • Demonstrated that plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. (showed that carbon in plants comes from the atmosphere, not the soil) • Also showed that water is absorbed during photosynthesis, since the plant weighed more than the carbon absorbed • He outlined the major chemical transformations in photosynthesis
