  3. Mary’s Faith and Trust • The Annunciation- “The announcement” • Mary says ‘yes’ to God’s invitation.

  4. Title for Mary - THEOTOKOS • means “GOD-BEARER”

  5. Immaculate Conception (1854) • The church dogma that Mary was conceived (in her mother’s womb) without original sin and remained free of sin.

  6. Why is it so important? • Mary’s virginity – a SIGN of Jesus’ divinity. • Also a SYMBOL that JESUS is the new ADAM (who was Adam’s father?)

  7. Mary- always a virgin… • Mary stayed a virgin her whole life as a SIGN of her total commitment to God.

  8. JOSEPH • Gospel of Matthew emphasizes JOSEPH. • Joseph has DREAMS. • Joseph TRUSTS that God is TRUSTWORTHY

  14. The Incarnation • From the Latin, meaning ‘to become flesh’ – • Jesus is both true God and true man.

  17. The Titles of Jesus • The name Jesus means “God Saves” in Hebrew. • Joshua – common form of Jesus • Name reflects his mission as Savior of the world

  18. The Titles of Jesus • Christ – not his last name • Greek translation of the Hebrew word MESSIAH- which means “ANOINTED” (with oil)

  19. The Titles of Jesus • SON of GOD – shows a special relationship with God. • We are ALL sons/daughters of God. • But with Jesus , it means more: • Only begotten Son of the Father • Co-substantial with the Father • Second person of the Holy Trinity.

  20. The Titles of Jesus • LORD – title of respect in the New Testament • Lord is the Greek word the Jews used for God instead of YAHWEH.
