  1. Learning Lithium Presentation by Andrew Bens

  2. Symbol • The Symbol for Lithium is Li.

  3. Atomics (Mass and Number) • The Atomic Mass is 6.941. • The Atomic Number is 3.

  4. Periodic Table Location • On the periodic table lithium is in the metals group. That group is located on the right side of the periodic table. More specifically, Lithium is an Alkali Metal. Metals are located on the left and middle side of the periodic table.

  5. History of Lithium • Lithium was discovered in 1800 by José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva in a mine on the island of Utö, Sweden. However Johan August Arfwedson was credited with the discovery lithium in 1817,in his laboratory. The etymological origin of lithium comes for the Greek word lithos, meaning stone. The symbol of Lithium was made by the scientist Arfwedson using the first two letters of lithium.

  6. Two Compounds that have Lithium in them • Lithium Nitrate- is made by reacting lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide with nitric acid. It’s Formula is LiNO3. It is used in red fireworks and flares. • Lithium Sulfate- is a white inorganic salt with the formula Li2SO4. It is a mixture of lithium salt and sulfuric acid. Lithium sulfate can also be used to treat bipolar disorder.

  7. Uses of Lithium • Lithium is used in the production of ceramics and glasses. • Lithium is used to fuel torpedoes. • Lithium is used in batteries. • Lithium is used to absorb carbon dioxide in space vehicles. • Lithium is used to make lightweight metals.

  8. What group is Lithium in? • Lithium is a metal! It is located on the right side of the periodic table with most of the other metals.

  9. Natural or Man-Made • Lithium is natural but, it is also man-made. Lithium can be found in nature in other substances. To be pure lithium, it has to be extracted from a substance. It is commonly found in mines, labs, and industrial products.

  10. Natural Lithium • Naturally, lithium is found in other minerals. Most ores containing lithium are only about 7.5% lithium. Petalite is an example of a mineral that contains lithium in nature.

  11. Fun Fact • Lithium salts were used during the 19th century to treat gout. Lithium salts such as lithium carbonate and lithium citrate are mood stabilizers. This is why the famous band, Nirvana, included lithium as the named of one of their songs “Lithium”.

  12. Specific Heat • Specific Heat : 3.489

  13. Physical Properties of Lithium • Lithium Melting Point — 453.69 K • Lithium Boiling Point — 1615 K • Soft • Silver • Lightest Metal • At room temperature, Lithium is a solid.

  14. Chemical Properties of Lithium • Lithium is very reactive. It is more reactive at higher temperatures. Lithium can react with acids containing hydrogen and water. Under the proper conditions, lithium reacts with oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen, and the halogens. • Lithium will spontaneously combust at 180 degrees Celsius. Lithium can be extremely hazardous in gas form.

  15. Its Astronomical! • Lithium as both of its stable isotopes was among the 3 elements included in the Big Bang. Furthermore, lithium is produced inside young stars. Lithium is also found in brown dwarf stars.
