  6. What is Naturopathic Medicine?

  7. Naturopathic Medicine is… An approach to health care that gets at the root of symptoms and illness by combining: • natural medicines and treatments • conventional medical diagnostics and standards

  8. Naturopathic doctors restore health and promote wellness using safe, effective natural therapies.

  9. Naturopathic doctors are one of only three health professions that provide primary health care for patients in Ontario, along with MDs and Nurse Practitioners.

  10. The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of illnesses, rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms.

  11. Naturopathic Training Closely Parallels Medical Training • Three years of undergraduate pre-medical sciences, and • A four year full-time clinical program in naturopathic medicine at a North American accredited college • This training prepares NDs for the challenges of primary care practice.

  12. Naturopathic Training Closely Parallels Medical Training • Naturopathic doctors have been regulated in Ontario since 1925. • Science-based, safe and effective patient-centered care is at the heart of naturopathic care.

  13. Naturopathic doctors are highly trained to use and combine these natural therapies: • Clinical nutrition • Botanical and herbal medicine • Physical therapies and spinal manipulation • Homeopathy • Asian medicine and acupuncture • Lifestyle counseling • IV Therapies

  14. Naturopathic visits are covered by most group health insurance plans. Talk to your employer about what coverage is available to you.

  15. New Naturopathy Act Ontario’s new Naturopathy Act will move NDs into the same regulatory framework as all other health care practitioners: • Reducing barriers to collaboration • Improving choice for Ontarians preferring a more natural approach to health care

  16. Naturopathic doctors know any flu virus poses a greater risk if the natural defenses are weak. Take care of the basics in bolstering these defenses, including eating well, getting enough exercise and sleep, and keeping stress in check. And see your ND for a flu prevention appointment.

  17. NDs are leaders in understanding the relationship between the environment and health, and in helping patients to restore their health.

  18. Top Ten Reasons to See a Naturopath

  19. 10. NDs primarily promote strategies to prevent chronic illness and disease. Patients are actively involved in taking charge of their health

  20. 9. Most therapies used by NDs have a long history of use, and with history comes knowledge of safety and effectiveness

  21. 8. NDs select from different treatment modalities for effective healing

  22. 7. Naturopathic medicines have few side effects and NDs are trained to identify any possible drug/herb interactions based on the patients’ existing medications

  23. 6. Naturopathic training is extensive and in-depth

  24. 5. NDs understand food as medicine

  25. 4. Naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose and treat most common illnesses and diseases for your whole family

  26. 3. Naturopathic treatments are often the least invasive

  27. 2. NDs take the time to build relationships with patients

  28. 1. Rather than focusing on a symptom, NDs focus on determining the cause of illness or disease and restoring health

  29. Naturopathic doctors are getting at the root of it…
