  1. Collin Madden 4A The Hobbit By: J. R. R. Tolkien George Allen & Unwin 1937

  2. Introduction • This book begins in the Shire, the domain of the hobbits. • Bilbo Baggins is surprised when he is visited by a band of dwarves and the talented wizard, Gandalf the Grey. • They expect him to be a burglar on a mission to retrieve the gold of the dwarves stolen by Smaug, a mighty dragon.

  3. Protagonist Antagonist Smaug: A mighty dragon that lives in the Lonely Mountain. He has a dark sense of humor. Bilbo Baggins: A hobbit, which is a small human like creature, that likes to stay quiet and confined to his home in the Shire.

  4. Central Conflict Long ago, the dwarves lived in the Lonely Mountain. They were very wealthy and prosperous which caught the attention of Smaug. He flew to the mountain, killed the dwarves and stole their treasure. Now some dwarves who survived want there revenge. Can Bilbo help the dwarves as their burglar?

  5. Minor Charactors Gollum: He was the creature from whom Bilbo received the ring. Thorin Oakenshield: He was the leader of the band of dwarves.

  6. Minor Characters Cont. Elrond: Leader of the elves, he aided the band on their pass through Rivendell.

  7. What The Critics Said. http://wwww.readingmatters.co.uk/book.php?in=71 The hobbit is a representation of all of in the fact that we are all comfortable with the status quo but can be subject to change. http://dauntlessmedia.net/middle-earth/hobbit/book-review.html The hobbit was a precursor to all modern fantasy. Though Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist, seems to be the typical hobbit and not enjoy adventure in the beginning, his character is shaped by his companions throughout the story.

  8. What I Say In my opinion, the book had a terrific story line. However, the writing style is obviously more suited for the younger reader. I found it to have poor sentence structure and a vocabulary that does not reach far past the 8th grade. I would not recommend this book to anyone over ager ten.
