  3. Coming up in today’s lesson... • Identify and discuss the use and effect of alcohol • Show how to work out the recommended daily allowance of alcohol • Demonstrate how to convert drinks into units

What is alcohol? • Alcohol is a drug that has the effect of altering the mood and senses whilst also affecting physical coordination. • An intoxicating beverage made by the fermentation of sugar. • Alcohol is a clear drink that is made from corn, barley, grain, rye. • A beverage containing ethanol

  5. Different types • Spirits • Beer/Ale • Lager • Cider • Liqueur • Aperitifs • Alcopops

  6. A Unit is 10ml of Pure Alcohol • One pint of strong lager (5%) = 3 units • One pint of standard lager (3%) = 2 units • One 275ml bottle of alcopop (5.5%) = 1.5 unit • One standard glass of wine (12%) = 2 units • One measure (25ml) of spirit = 1 unit

  9. Guidelines • Current UK guidelines recommend that: • Men don’t drink more than three or four units of alcohol a day. • Women limit their intake to two or three units a day.

  10. Isn’t this a maths lesson? • Now that you have looked at alcohol, we are going to look at the maths! • What does alcohol have to do with maths?

  13. Activity • How many units? • Look at the scenarios on the handout and work out their alcohol consumption/ units on their night out! • You will need to apply an effective addition and subtraction method as well as be able to work with conversions • Here are some tips...

  14. Tips - Conversions Remember you need to look at STRENGTH and quantity! • RTFQ! Read The Fact or Question! For example; 1 half pint of normal beer = 1unit therefore 1 Pint= 2Units
