  2. Kinetic Energy Weapons The use of weapons that launch projectiles at hyper-velocity, a speed around Mach 7 or higher. The projectiles do not use explosive material, instead it utilizes the kinetic force to reproduce the effect of explosive material i.e. nuclear, T.N.T.

  4. Rail Gun A railgun is an electrically powered electromagnetic projectile launcher based on similar principles to the homopolar motor. A railgun comprises a pair of parallel conducting rails, along which a sliding armature is accelerated by the electromagnetic effects of a current that flows down one rail, into the armature and then back along the other rail. Railguns have long existed as experimental technology but the mass, size and cost of the required power supplies` have prevented railguns from becoming practical military weapons. However, in recent years, significant efforts have been made towards their development as feasible military technology. For example, in the late 2000s, the U.S. Navy tested a railgun that accelerates a 3.2kg (7 pound) projectile to hypersonic velocities of approximately 2.4 kilometres per second (5,400mph), about Mach7. They gave the project the Latin motto "Velocitas Eradico", which is Latin for "I, [who am] speed, eradicate", but may have been intended as "Speed kills" or similar.

  5. Pros Projectiles can reach speeds that conventional guns cannot reproduce. Projectiles can achieve speed without the volatile reaction gunpowder produces. No materials needed to launch weapon i.e. gunpowder. Safer environment, no explosion.

  6. Cons The amount of energy required to launch projectiles is tremendous. Technology still in development with a projected date of use in about 10 years. The current material can only withstand a few launches before it starts to breakdown The size of current weapons are massive and not man portable yet.

Rods of God: Project Thor • Project Thor: Is an idea for weapon system that launches kinetic projectile from earth orbit to damage targets on the ground. • The most system is “an orbiting tungsten telephone pole with small fins and a computer in the back for guidance” The system was described to be that of 20-foot-long, 1 foot diameter rods and had impact speeds of Mach 10.

Pros: • The system is not prohibited by either the outer space treaty nor the anti-ballisitc missile treaty. • There is no requirement to deploy missels, aircraft or ither vehicles when the system needs to be used with 6-8 satelites on a given orbit, a target could be hit within 12-15 minutes from any given time, less than half the time taken by an ICBM without warning.

  9. Pros Cont’d • The weapon would be very hard to defend against. It has a very high closing velocity and a small radar cross-section. Launch is difficult to detect. • Deterring away from nuclear weaponry is safer and has a lesser hazard risk • Penetrates deep underground to destroy hidden and important enemy installations (bunker buster)

Cons • Not enough data and research to know exact capabilities and results • Database if rods’ speed would be so high that they would vaporize on impact, before the rods could penetrate the surface • The “absence ratio”- the fact that orbiting satelittes circle the earth every 100 minutes and so that any given time might be far from the desired target.

Cons contd’ • Does not address protection from other methods from delivering nuclear weapons to the united states • All concepts for a future defense of population are known to be susceptible to countermeasures that would permit other nations to retain a degree of penetration with their future missile arsenal despite costly attempts to improve the U.S. defense

  12. HVM (hyper velocity missiles) • HVMs were developed back in the 1980s. This missle carried no warhead and used kinetic energy to kill its targets. In the 1980s, this weapon was used for the A-10 thunderbolt 2 and in the 1990s was then used for helicopters. HVMs were intended to be used to offer the standoff performance while requiring a minimum of support electronics. The average HVM is a little bit under 3 meters long and 10 cm in diameter .

  13. Pros: • Never deployed or developed • Was used to over see NASA space shuttle program • Paved the way for some anti-ballistic systems today • Less weapon weight • Smaller firing signature • Likely lower cost of ammunition • Technologically locked in

  15. Cons: • Unrealistic • Took over 10 years of research • System became smaller over time • More dangerous than a high powered gun
