  3. Glasgow City Council • Purpose of Event • Identify why the Council is adopting the ‘Co- operative Council’ concept • Opportunity for delegates to participate in developing and informing our action plan for Glasgow

Glasgow City Council • Background • Administration’s Manifesto and Strategic Plan contained Commitments to: • develop Glasgow as a Co-operative City and; • promote and support co-operative, mutual and social enterprise business models in the city through the creation of a Cooperative Development Unit.

Glasgow City Council • Co-operatives around the world • In the USA, 30,000 co-operatives provide more than 2 million jobs • In Spain, the Mondragon Corporation employs over 80,000 people and has assets worth more that 35bn Euros • In India, the Kerala sugar cane co-ops have over 50 million members • In the UK, there were 6169 co-ops in 2012 with turnover of £36bn. 593 of these are in Scotland (£4.2 bn) • In Glasgow, there are approximately 110 co-ops
