General Renaissance Art Characteristics • The Renaissance period is where we see the first oil painting on canvas • Paintings took on three dimensions through the use of shadow and light • Subjects included mythical and nature scenes, and religious icons in particular (Madonna and child, Christ, etc.) • Artists made sure to use realistic proportions (heads in relation to bodies, for example)

  3. This da Vinci sculpture, entitled Equestrian Statue,depicts Sforza, which means force in English. Many Renaissance sculptures depict images of strength.
