Arizona Partnership Implementing Patient Safety (APIPS) • Started in 2002, incorporated in 2006 • Interested in statewide Patient Safety Initiatives • Fifty health care organizations • Activities include: • Healthcare Summit • Health Care Decisions Week • E-Prescribing • Consumers - represented on Board

AzHHA Safe and Sound • Goal - Arizona will be Safest State in the nation • “Alert” Wrist Bands • Statewide and Regional • The Med Form • Prevention of medication errors • Available Spanish/English and www.themedform.com • Take Five • Five easy steps to remember when going to hospital • Forget Me Not • September, 2007 - Focus on role of patient/family in safety • Addresses cultural issues within the organization • Consumers - On hospitals boards, focus groups, education.

Phoenix Healthcare Value Measurement Initiative (PHVMI) • Collaborative venture of Arizona employers, providers, and health plans • Data Repository - Arizona HealthQuery at the Center for Health Information & Research at ASU • Agreed on Consensus based goals: • Improve community health • Collaborate to assure access to data • Publicly report value • Support the building of HIT Infrastructure • Promote beneficiary involvement • Consumers - Educate and partner

Arizona Health Information Exchange and Electronic Health Record (HIeHR) Utility Project • Federal Medicaid Transformation Grant - $12 million to Arizona Health Care Cost Containment system (AHCCCS) • Develop an on-line HIE and EHR system through secure web portal • Goal - 2009 • Aligned with Arizona Health-e Connection, non-profit to coordinate HIT in Arizona; Arizona Health Privacy Project focused on HIE privacy and security issues; and Southern Arizona Health Information Exchange (SAHIE) • Consumers - Focus Groups, January 2008

Arizona Health-e Connection • Mission Statement • “To facilitate the design and implementation of integrated statewide health data information systems that support the information needs of consumers, health plans, policymakers, providers, purchasers, and researchers and that reduce healthcare costs, improve patient safety, and improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare and public health services in Arizona”. • Executive Order in 2005 - Establish Roadmap to achieve a plan for Arizona to achieve statewide HIT and explore the implementation of EHR by 2010 • Funding - St. Luke’s Health Initiatives and BHHS Legacy Foundation • Involved Steering Committee, 5 task groups, 250 members, five months. • Executive Director Hired - July, 2007 • Consumers - Represented on Board and Committees

  10. What is being done to include consumers? • Recognition of consumer involvement • Strategic Partnerships • Board Involvement, Committee Representation, and Focus Groups • Health Guide America

Health Guide America • HGA established in 2006 • Non profit 501C3 • Grassroots effort • Mission: To help individuals and communities make informed decisions about healthcare through education, dialogue , and access to information. • Services include: • Consumer Advocacy Network • Communication Strategies • Web-based Resources for consumers

Health Guide America (cont’d) • Held first Planning Meeting, representing eight local consumer organizations • Establish network to: • Select important initiatives and inform consumers • Support state initiatives • Identify issues and topics for consumer education • Apply for grants and seek other funding opportunities
