  1. Nutrition & Metabolism pp. 39, 42-49, 454, & 478-486

  2. Functions?

  3. Metabolic Importance of the Liver

  4. Carbohydrates

  5. Carb Digestion & Absorption

  6. Carbohydrate Metabolism • Glucose = Main fuel source for cells • Role of the liver • Converts other monosacch. into glucose • Stores excess carbs as glycogen • Releases glycogen as necessary

  7. Lipids

  8. Lipid Digestion & Absorption

  9. Lipid Metabolism • Triglycerides = Main stored fuel source • Role of the liver • Uses fats as fuel source & stores excess fat • Converts fatty acids into other molecules • Produces cholesterol & fat molecules

  10. Cholesterol Transport • Only 15% of blood cholesterol comes from the diet (85% made by the liver) • Lipoproteins • Made by the liver • Transport lipids through the bloodstream • Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) – transport cholesterol TOcells • Too high – indicates likelihood of atherosclerosis • High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) – transport cholesterol FROM cells to the liver for disposal • “Good” because helps get rid of cholesterol • BALANCE of LDL and HDL is important – want to prevent buildup of excess cholesterol

  11. Proteins

  12. Protein Digestion & Absorption

  13. Protein Metabolism • Proteins are hoarded by cells • Role of the liver • Produces plasma proteins & lipoproteins • Converts some amino acids to others
