  2. Generic Conventions Typical conventions of social realism films include: • Often focuses on the struggle of the working/lower class • Urban locations are very common • Everyday struggles • Hard luck • Realistic events and situations • Gritty style

  3. Representation of Characters Examples of typical representations of characters are: • Working class/ not very wealthy • Everyday/ordinary characters • Hard working • Struggling to make ends meet • Sometimes on the wrong track/misguided by peers etc.

  4. Mise-en-Scene • Setting- Often in a very ran down/poor environment (housing estates etc.). Or a very wealthy environment with a character that is uncomfortable in their surroundings. • Lighting- Normal to dull, can be very de-saturated in dramatic scenes and have a general grey wash. To represent the general unhappiness and struggle of the characters.

  5. Props/Costume/Make up- all very basic and everyday, nothing special and all quite plain. Costumes help to represent the characters status and income. • Camera work- basic shots (associated pov/ mid & close up shots) with the occasional unsteady camera to emphasise drama. Close ups and extreme close ups are particularly important to portray the underlying emotion of the character which is often being suppressed.
