Definition styles. Finding a style to suit a particular word or a particular type of dictionary. Difficulties. Different words require different styles of definitions. Nouns, verbs, and interjections require very different kinds of definitions.

  1. Definition styles Finding a style to suit a particular word or a particular type of dictionary.

Difficulties • Different words require different styles of definitions. • Nouns, verbs, and interjections require very different kinds of definitions. • Words from different domains require different kinds of definitions. • Different types of dictionaries require different styles of definitions. • A dictionary for children and a technical dictionary will use very different styles. • One size does not fit all.

  3. Folk definitions • “Daddy, what does polygamy mean?” “It’s when a man has two wives.” polygamyn. When a man has two wives. polygamyn. The practice of marrying more than one wife.

  4.   5. If-then definitions • Put the word in a frame, followed by an explanation of the meaning. If a man is a polygamist, he has more than one wife.
