Study Sample Findings Vaccine Completion Rates • Purpose • Locate, screen, vaccinate and counsel “hard to reach” high risk cases of hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV in selected Western Massachusetts communities • Determine the relationship between HCV positivity and specific risk factors • 29.7% completed at least one vaccine series • 14.5% were involved in a vaccine series that was still in process, • 55.8% began a vaccine series but did not complete it Current IV Drug Users 83.3% of participants currently using injected intravenous drugs (43.8% HCV positive) or those who were not currently using drugs (23.4%). (χ2 (2) =20.845 , p < .001) History of sharing needles, cooker or cotton for injecting drugs 75% of participants who have a history of sharing needles, cookers, or cotton (7.6% HCV positive). (χ2(1) =83.198, p < .001) Treatment History for Drug Abuse or Alcoholism 38.4% of participants with a history of receiving treatment for drug abuse or Alcoholism (13.1%). (χ2 (1) =12.138, p < .001) Screening Location 50.7% of participants who were recruited from a harm-reduction outreach center for IV drug users tested HCV positive. (χ2 (3) =26.006, p < .001) County of Residence 41.1% of participants who identified themselves as residents of Hampden(χ2 (2)=12.506, p = .002) Age 35.8% of participants between 30-49 years of age tested HCV positive, (χ2 (2) =8.086 , p = .018) Mobile Outreach for Hepatitis C and HIV in Western Massachusetts Risk Factors • Aims • Protocol development for screening • Develop Hepatitis C and HIV risk screening tools • Acquire Hepatitis A and B vaccine contract • Collaborate with Cooley Dickinson Hospital and University Health Services • Orient and develop a team of outreach RNs, students and health care professionals • Select 4 high risk sites in Western MA • Holyoke • Northampton (2) • Westfield Donna M.
