  4. AODA – Integrated Accessibility Standards • In addition to the Customer Service Standard: • Employment Standards • Transportation Standards • Information and Communication Standards

  5. 15. (1) Every obligated organization that is an educational or training institution shall do the following, if notification of need is given: • 1. Provide educational or training resources or materials in an accessible format that takes into account the accessibility needs due to a disability of the person with a disability to whom the material is to be provided by,

How to Provide Accessible Formats • i. procuring through purchase or obtaining by other means an accessible or conversion ready electronic format of educational or training resources or materials, where available, or • ii. arranging for the provision of a comparable resource in an accessible or conversion ready electronic format, if educational or training resources or materials cannot be procured, obtained by other means or converted into an accessible format.

Accessibility Services • Types of services we offer: • Accessibility Services counselling • Accommodation planning • Assistive Technology (AT) assessments, training and on-going support • Learning Strategy sessions • Learning Coach services (note-takers, test-taking help – readers and scribes, etc.)

  11. Statistics for 2010/2011 Academic Year • 6326 full time students. • 1010 Students or 16% or 1 in 6 (approx) • How many students in your avg classroom?

  12. Percentages by type of disability • 37% Psychiatric diagnosis • 34% Learning Disabilities • 12% Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder • 6% Chronic Illness or Medical Disability • 10% Mobility, Hearing, Vision, ABI and ‘Other’

Accommodation Letters • How is the accommodation letter generated? • What do faculty do with the accommodation letter? • How will I know if it requires conversion ready formatting etc? • How much am I allowed to ask the student regarding their disability? • Do I have to provide accessible ready materials if student does not have an accommodation letter?

Access to Information • Accessibility means that information is presented in an accessible format from the beginning. • Conversion-ready means the document is in an electronic format that can be converted into an accessible format. It is about providing learning material in a way that works for all students.

  20. Accessible Videos • Open Captions: Displays the audio portion of a video as text on the screen. The captions are permanently displayed • Closed Captions: Displays the audio portion of a video as text on the screen. Captions are an option and are not permanently displayed on the screen.

  21. Videos • Described video (DV) is also called video description or described narrative. DV is a narrated description of a video's main visual elements, such as settings, costumes, or body language. The description is added during pauses in dialogue, and enables people to form a mental picture of the program.

  22. Suggestions for Video - Not Captioned or Described • Debrief the video by providing specific questions for group work • Ask each group to post answers on blackboard • Test on information that is accessible – posted questions and answers • Put videos on reserve
