  1. Update on Center for High Performance Computing.

  2. CHPC 7th Annual Meeting Sponsorships Diamond sponsor: INTEL Sponsors: DELL, CRAY, IBM, HP, EMC2, BCX, MELLANOX, ECLIPSE Holdings, QFINSOFT, British High Commission – Pretoria, Huawei, Xyratex, DDN and MINTEK. Just over 350 delegates registered (after some onsite registrations). The 8thAnnual Meeting to be held in Kruger National Park from the 1st to 5th December 2014 Contact NoxoloMoyakefor more details.

  3. HPC Services SUN/DELL Cluster average utilisation over 90%. Additional storage Lustrestorage to double the capacity. Heterogeneous test-bed cluster commissioned with 6 NVIDIA K20m and INTEL Xeon and Xeon-Phi 5100. GROMACS, NAMD and OpenCV were successfully ported on the cluster. Cloud Services. Small test-bed designed for users. Tested by Bio-Informatics and Computational Mechanics. Working with SAP to define Government-Public Cloud. IBM e1350 cluster providing GRID services to be replaced and increase capacity (both compute and storage)  Tier 2 CERN requirements. Modify the User Policies and update the scheduler. On-site storage and the size of the jobs

  4. 100 distinct computers have access to Accelrys License (Materials Studio and Discovery Studio Users) The Gaussian code remains highly used application on the system with Quantum Espresso and VASP the second most used. The NEMO code is highly scalable with over 1200 cores used per job. The Innovation from ACELab contributed to OpenNebula project with a driver enabling native support for Infiniband in KVM based virtual machines. Increase in peer-reviewed journal publications by users and student graduations. Long queues showing the demand for more resources  Next Gen. HPC. Demand for on-site storage: User Specific requirements factored into policy

  5. Strategic Projects Private Sector Partnership to increase industrial uptake of HPC  Currently a number of industries using CHPC resources and completed PoC with others. The Bio-Informatics Service Platform has been operationalised and a continuation for the service extended to also accommodate H3AFrica project. Participate in the SKA-SDP Consortium project on building prototype for the Exascale Computing and Development of Science Workflows. 20 Racks of the RANGER from TACC have been delivered in South Africa to provide for institution and start HPC curriculum and provide some level of local processing capabilities, where there is none. SADC HPC Collaboration driven in collaboration with DST- International Relations. The UK High Commission is providing mobility grant for researchers to collaborate on Big Data Initiative. This support enabled a number of UK scientist to attend the 7th Annual Meeting this year.

  6. Student Cluster Challenge. Success in ISC’13 student competition where South African team became overall winners of the competition. DELL supported the students with HW, travel and accommodation for trips to Germany and Austin. Mellanox provided the interconnect. 6 teams from different universities entered this year’s competition. Support from DELL ( 4 teams), CRAY and HP a team each. The winning team for this year will participate in the ISC’14 competition and DELL is providing support.

  7. DST support and the DG keynote address International and local speakers SADC HPC and data workshop Industrial forum Second HPC students cluster competition Millerton High School students Number of training workshops held (2ndand 3rdDec) and programing school (25th -30th Dec) Commitment of sponsors for CHPC Annual Meeting: Thanks to all sponsors!! CSIR-CHPC staff.
