  1. R290 Air Conditioner Presented on behalf of GREE By Dr. Volkmar Hasse, GTZ-PROKLIMA INTERNATIONAL At the Joint West Asia and South Asia Network Meeting 10 May 2009

  2. R290 Air Conditioner Content • 1. Company Introduction • 2. R290 A/C Product Introduction 2.1 General Introduction 2.2 R290 Compressor 2.3 Refrigerant Leak Alarm System • 3. Market development

  3. 1.Company Introduction • Company Introduction • — Gree Electric Appliance Inc. of Zhuhai (China) Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai, founded in 1991, has become the world’s largest specialised air conditioners company. The company integrates R&D, manufacture, sales and service. In 2008, the annual sales revenues achieved 42 billion RMB (about 4.2 billion Euro) The company is listed among the top "100 Chinese Companies" by Fortune Magazine for eight consecutive years.

  4. 1.Company Introduction 1.Company Introduction Gree markets the unique "World Brand" air conditioners in China Today, Gree products are sold in 200 countries. Since 1995 and for 13 continuous years, Gree's sales volume and market share has occupied No. 1 in the Chinese air conditioner industry. Since 2005, for the three consecutive years since then, Gree’s sales volume of residential air conditioners occupied the first place, globally. For 2008, 190 million units were sold world wide.

  5. 2. R290 A/C Product Introduction 2. R290 A/C Product Introduction • 2.1 General Introduction • The R290 containing air conditioners can be produced cheaper than R22 products, because: • Narrower tubes can be used in the condenser and evaporator since R290 has better heat transfer properties and a lower pressure drop. • R290 refrigerant is even cheaper Please note also: R22 air conditioners are cheaper than R407C and R410A units Conclusion: R290 air conditioners will be much cheaper than R410A units

  6. 2.1 General Introduction Safety features Gree R290 designs achieved lower refrigerant charge size than is currently required by international standards for R290 air conditioners (IEC 60335-2-40) Additional features include a special compressor design and refrigerant leak alarm system The R290 air conditioners will achieve CE marking (i.e., conform to all EU legislation)

  7. 2.1 General Introduction Capacity and Size of R290 units The COP is ≥ 3.52 This is better than the “A” rating of the EU efficiency labelling for air conditioners

  8. Improved Electric connecter to reduce risk of electric ignition 2.2 R290 Compressor 2.2 R290 Compressor Special material inside: compatible, anti-aging design Exhaust structure: more suitable compression ratio, improved efficiency Special lubrication oil: make compressor operation more stable and reliable The compressor COP reached up to 3.4 which is higher than that of other companies’ R290 compressors. Gree’s R290 compressors currently cost only as much as a R410A compressor. Cost is likely to go down when production increases.

  9. 2.3 Refrigerant Leak Alarm System 2.3 Refrigerant Leak Alarm System Function Should a leak be detected in the AC system: * The compressor will stop operating at once. — This avoids high temperature and protects the compressor * The fans will keep on running (indoor and outdoor) — This dilutes the leaking refrigerant through the air flow and thereby avoids gathering gas in the small area and flammable concentrations. * A special audible alarm and flashing light signal will turn on — This alarms the owner to open the door or window of the room for ventilation and to call the service telephone number.

  10. 2.3 Refrigerant Leaking Alarm System Theory of the Alarm System • As refrigerant leaks out, the performance of the system will drop • The operating parameters of a leaking AC system are different compared to a normally functioning AC unit. • As the A/C system leaks, the system pressure, refrigerant and air temperatures, electric current, etc. will all change • An electronic control device detects this intelligently and recognises that a leak is really happening, thereby triggering the alarm and shutting the AC down.

  11. 3. Marketing 3. Market development • The development of the refrigerant leakage detection and alarm system will be completed in July 2009. • Mass production of the R290 units will start before December 2009. • Target market: • Primary focus will be in Europe and China • as experience is gained marketing will extend to many other countries

  12. Thank you very much for your interest in the ozone and climate friendly R290 technology for air conditioners Thank you 谢谢您们
