  1. Kenya's drought

  2. ¤ Summary ¤ *Kenya before the drought. *Consequences of the drought on the: - Animals and humans fight to survive - Lake Naivasha. *Rose production.

  3. Kenya before the drought.

  4. Kenya has got two seasons climates: the wet one (april and may) and the dry one (october and november). The lanscape consists of savannas. There are lots of animals parks like: Masai Mara, Nakuru, Samburu ... In Kenya, we can see the Big five : leopards lions, rhinoceros, buffaloes and elephants.

  5. Drought in Kenya: men and animals fight to survive.

  6. Everything is going wrong in Kenya. Today, the country is in a very bad state : a serious drought is devasting the country. Every day, animals are dying, most of the poor part of the population and the animals( all of them depending on the water from the dried up lakes ) know that their turn will come.

  7. Consequences of the drought on Lake Naivasha.

  8. The quantity of water in the lake of Naivasha is going down because of the terrible drought in Kenya. This lake is, for the population of Nairobi, the only driking water they have and the depend on it. Most farmers are in bad need of water for their land & to feed their animals The animals are trying to find other lakes and rivers, but the most of them die. A lot of species of fish are exported in many countries and their aren't any fish left in Lake Naivasha. Today an average of 50 tonnes of crayfish are exported in one year. The local fishermen depend on the fish from the lake to feed their family, and every day, a lot of people are dying from lack of food.

  9. One of the most important factors which cause the drought in Kenya : the production of roses.

  10. At eighty kilometres in the South of Ecuador, Kenya shelters one of the vastest zones of production of roses in the world. The floriculture is the new El Dorado of Kenya, the first supplier of roses in Europe. In 2007, flowers represented 50 % of the exports of the country, for a 400 million dollar turnover. Rare are nevertheless the French consumers to suspect that some roses bought from the market were picked 48 hours earlier in the high plains of East Africa … The working conditions are often not great under the large greenhouses, the farmers often work a lot for a minimum salary. The impacts on the environment also arouse the controversy : big rose companies continue to drain water from lakes (espacially lake Naivasha) and don't consider the impacts on the envirroment, the animals and the poor part of the population who depend mostly on water from the lakes… So, next time, when you by some flowers, make sure they don't come from one of the big farms from Kenya, and think of all the people, animals and plants affected by your small everyday purchase...!
