History • 18th-19th Century • Gender roles derived through classical thought, Christian ideology, contemporary sciences, medicine • Men and Women= different qualities and virtues • Men • Strong, intelligent, courageous, determined, aggressive • Women • Emotional, chastity, modesty, compassion, piety, passive
Expectations derived from qualities and virtues • Marriage • Men • Expected to rule over wives and property • Primary wage earners • Women • Household work, childcare • Paid employment was low status. Fewer skills involved
18th Century • Dominated by men • Men: more level headed • Women: unpredictable, promiscuous • Stayed at home to keep them in line • 19th Century • Decline in degrading thought of women • Married women were expected to give up jobs and live at home • Mothers and “Angels of the house” • Unmarried women were still looked down upon • Not necessarily the case for men
20th Century • Early 1920’s • Women juggle careers and family • Men still prominent source of income • WWII • Men went to war. Work needed. • Women hired to do “men’s jobs”. • Women created the Women’s Army Corps • Baby Boom • Came after WWII • Sent men and women back into more stereotypical roles • Men worked to support bigger families • Women stayed at home to cook, clean and care for children
Late 1900’s • Women moved back into working roles • Men shared the household income • However, men still main source of income • Line that once separated the genders became more blurred
Social/Ethical Views • Always going to be people who think men are superior to women • People who believe men and women are on the same level • People who think women are superior to men • Ratio of women as a field increases the average paycheck decreases • Force Gender among children • Toys • Clothes
Political Views- Women • Running for Higher Positions • Ex. Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton • Outfits or Idea’s? • Criticized
Political Views- Men • Usually hold higher Positions • President • Looked at for their ideas not what they wear.
