  2. What is Assistive Technology • Assistive technology (AT) is any tool that helps students with disabilities do things more quickly, easily or independently (SC Curriculum n.d.). • It can range from low cost pencil grips all the way up to high priced laptops and computer software. • Anything that can benefit the learning of the student can be classified as AT.

  3. What does the law say? • Through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997, the federal government mandated that assistive technology devices and services should be considered for each child with a disability (SC Curriculum n.d.). • Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act also state that schools are required to provide assistive technology and services. • When dealing with students, signs of assistive technology should be shown in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) (Assistive Technology with Physical Impairments n.d.).

  4. Examples of AT Enlarged keyboard, reading pen, pencil grip, assistive laptop, Dragon software

  5. 4 Groups • Typically when working with individuals who need assistance they can fall into 4 different categories They are usually as follows: • Hearing Impaired • Visually Impaired • Learning Disabled • Physically Disabled

  6. Hearing Impaired • Pictured to the right is a sound amplifier. This is to be worn by the student in order to amplify the sound waves to where the teachers voice can be heard with ease (Assistive Devices, n.d.). • This device can be used in a one on one setting or in group/ classroom environment.

  7. Visually Impaired • Resources available for those who are visually impaired include amplified computer and LCD monitors and tactile images along with braille. • These resources make it much easier for a student to read larger print or if a student is completely blind to be able to read braille.

  8. Learning Disabled • Autism can be a serious learning problem for some students. • A child with autism may display few social interactions, speech impairment or repetitive language (Assistive Technologies 2015). • Pictured is the Dynavox T series tablet. These tablets use augmented communication to help students. Students can use text or drawings to get their information across and the tablet will record or assist (T-Series n.d.).

  9. Physically Disabled • Physical disabilities can hinder an individual, but does not have to hinder them mentally. • There are several forms of technology to aid with physical disabilities such as eye tracking and enlarged keyboards. • These two tools are used for those who may have slight or full loss of motor control. The enlarged key board will provide bigger keys while the eye tracking software will monitor the students eyes and depict the words.
