  1. CNC Box Autodesk Inventor EdgeCAM CNC Motion - Part 3 Prolight CNC Mill

  2. CNC MotionLID INTERIOR

  3. CNC Motion – LID INTERIOR LOAD MILL – SET PRZ / Origin • T5 – ½” End Mill • Spacer = 1.1875” • PRZ • Top Surface • Front • Left

  4. CNC Motion – LID INTERIOR LOAD MILL – SET PRZ • Find PRZ • Verify Program • Run Program

  5. CNC Motion – LID INTERIOR Setup Verify • Select Stock & Vise • Length = 3.0 • Width = 3.0 • Height = 1 • Spacer = 1.1875

  6. CNC Motion – LID INTERIOR Virtual Verify

  7. CNC Motion – LID INTERIOR Milling Operations • Profiling – Boss • 1st Profile • Offset 0.5” • 2nd Profile • Offset 0.25” • 3rd Profile • Offset 0.0 • Roughing - Pocket

  8. CNC MotionSurface – LID EXTERIOR

  9. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Setup for Surfacing Warning: If the LID and BASE fit loosely together, this process is not recommended. LID INTERIOR After milling we are left with a Boss on each piece as well as material left in the corners from the profiling operation. The need the lid to be temporally attached to the base to be held and located in the mill for the surface operation. BASE Currently the material left from the profiling operation is interfering with the lids ability to be placed and attached onto the base. Some of the material will need to be roughly removed.

  10. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Setup The material in the corners does not need to be completely removed. It will be beneficial in the final process for some (about 50%) of the boss remain on one side A band saw can be used to quickly remove about half of each column. This will provide enough Clarence for the LID INTERIOR to fit onto the BASE

  11. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Setup Once the BASE and LID INTERIOR are fitted together, we can use electrical tape to snuggly wrap and hold the BASE and LID INTERIOR temporarily together. Stretch the tape tightly around the seam of the two parts.

  12. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Setup Do not just cover the seam. Wrap the part 5 or 6 times and cover an area approximately 1” to 1.25” wide. Ensure the two parts are firmly held together by gently twisting the parts. Warning: If the parts seem to still contain a lose tolerance, it is not recommended to proceeded with a surface process using this strategy.

  13. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE LOAD MILL – SET PRZ / Origin • T5 – ½” End Mill • T3 – ¼” Ball End • Spacer = None • PRZ • Top Surface • Front • Right

  14. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE LOAD MILL – SET PRZ / Origin • Home Machine • Find PRZ • Verify Program • Run Program

  15. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Setup Verify • Select Stock & Vise • Length = 3.0 • Width = 3.0 • Height = 1 • Spacer = 1.25 • X Offset = 6 • Select Verify Settings from the Setup drop-down • Change X Axis to -3.0

  16. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Virtual Verify

  17. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss • Once the PRZ / Origin has been located and saved, the top boss will be removed Once the boss has been removed, it will be extremely difficult to again find the PRZ for the surface operation of this part.

  18. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss - Facing • A facing program may be written in Edgecam to remove this ¼” Boss • In this example, we are going to manually face this part. • Avoid plunging onto the part as this pressure might cause the part to shift .

  19. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss - Facing • Use the Jog Control Panel to manually locate the facing tool (example ½” end mill) in front of the part.

  20. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss - Facing • Manually turn the Spindle on • Select Go To Position from the Setup drop down • Set the Z axis to -0.125 • Feed 10 in/min • Select go

  21. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss - Facing • Manually jog the tool across the top of the part to the other side. • Move the part over approx. 50% of the bit diameter • Return the tool across the part • Repeat across the part

  22. CNC Motion – SETUP for SURFACE Remove Boss – Facing • Again open the Go to Position command • Set the Z axis to -0.25 • Repeat the previous steps to finish the facing process. • Open the Set Position command • Set the current Z axis to 0

  23. CNC Motion – Run SURFACE Milling Operations • Roughing • Remove Bulk • Surface Operation • Parallel Lace 45° • 60% Step Over • Surface Operation • Parallel Lace -45° • 60% Step Over

  24. CNC Motion – Finish Part Remove Part • Remove the part from the vise • Remove the tape

  25. Band saw– Finish Part Remove Bottom Boss • Band saw • Set the distance from the rip fence to the blade • Offset = +0.50 (just over ½”) • Carefully remove the boss from the bottom of the BASE For safety, it is recommended that this operation be performed by the instructor.

  26. Finishing– Finish Part Remove Bottom Boss • If necessary, use a fine grit sandpaper to remove any band saw marks off the bottom of the box
