  5. Key Concept #1 In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Delaware had a primarily agricultural economy which was supported by a labor system of indentured servitude and slavery.

  6. Key Concept #2 In the 18th century, mills and manufacturing facilities sprang up in Northern Delaware along waterways in order to take advantage of waterpower and easy access to markets in Philadelphia.

  7. Key Concept #3 In the 19th century, turnpikes, railroads, and steamboats assisted in Southern Delaware’s economic development by connecting isolated regions of Delaware with urban markets.

  8. Philadelphia Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Connected All Parts of the Delmarva Peninsula.

  9. Key Concept #4 By the mid 19th century, the importance of milling had decreased in Northern Delaware and the regional economic focus shifted to manufactured goods and the gunpowder industry.

  10. Key Concept #5 The Civil War, World War I, and World War II stimulated Delaware’s manufacturing economy which produced supplies for the war effort.

  16. Key Concept #7 In the 1920s and 1930s, newly-built highways increased access to Delaware’s beaches thereby creating a resort/beach economy.

  17. Key Concept #8 After World War II, Southern Delaware’s economy expanded with the development of agribusiness in which farmers controlled all facets of the broiler industry.

  18. Key Concept #9 After World War II, manufacturing in Delaware declined, and Delaware’s economy shifted to one based on banking, research, and housing business headquarters.

  19. Key Concept #10 Delaware’s current incorporation and income tax laws attract banks and large businesses to relocate their headquarters in Delaware, thereby stimulating the economy and producing jobs.

Objectives • Students will be able to explain how the Civil War, World War I, and World War II impacted manufacturing in Delaware. • Students will analyze maps and documents to explain how advances in transportation and Delaware’s geographic location affected the economic growth of different regions in Delaware. • Students will be able to identify ways in which agribusiness and the broiler industry have affected Southern Delaware’s economy. • Students will analyze how Delaware’s economy shifted from an agrarian to an industrial economy between the 18th and 19th centuries. • Students will be able to identify ways in which Delaware’s chemical and manufacturing industries changed in the 20th century. • Students will be able to explain why Delaware laws have encouraged businesses to relocate to the state and what impact these new businesses have had on employment.
