  1. Macbeth By: Haley Haggard

  2. Lady MacBeth’s “Out-Out” Speech “Out, damned spot; out, I say. One, two,—why, then ’tis time to do’t. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard? What need we fear who knows it when none can call our power to account? Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?”

  3. Blood • Blood in the play is equal to guilt • Thinks she sees blood stains of Duncan • Old man with so much blood = so much guilt

  4. Sleepwalking • General unrest • Unknowingly confesses • No inhibitions about confessing • Isn’t the first time she’s sleepwalking (doctor and gentlewoman) • Only confesses in sleep • Makes crimes known to others • Façade of dominance and strength let down • Necessity of sleepwalking for confession scene

  5. Wringing Hands • Washing away sin • Nervous/anxious movement (not confident) • Obsessive

  6. Hallucinations • Common theme in Macbeth • Husband saw daggers + ghost of Banquo • Similarly ailed • Again, guilt • She mocked him, now the same

  7. Iambic Pentameter • Shakespeare always uses, not here • Shows craziness • Abruptness • Choppy • Losing control

  8. Fear • “Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard? What need we fear who knows it when none can call our power to account?” • Tries to assuage guilt with assertion of power • Questioned Macbeth’s manliness • Connotation - Too powerful to get caught • Soldiers should not have fear • Then ‘we fear’

  13. Lady Macbeth by Barclay James Harvest • Like a jester dressedIn a silly gownSomething evil came to townAt the darkest hourIn the dead of nightAll who'd listen gathered roundFrom the uninspiredFrom the tortured soundsNo one noticed what she'd doneBy the pricking of my thumbsSomething wicked this way comes Like a fool possessedEvil grabbed the bladeDripping blood upon the keysWith her cheap disguise
